How to Use This Calculator
Using this share profit calculator takes less than a minute. Here is all you do:
- Enter your trade details. Type in the number of shares you bought, your buy price, and your sell price. If your broker charged you a commission, add that too. If not, leave the commission fields at 0.
- Click “Calculate Profit / Loss.” The calculator will instantly show you your total cost, total revenue, profit or loss in dollars, ROI percentage, and profit per share.
- Read your results. Green numbers mean you made money. Red numbers mean you lost money. Use the ROI number to compare this trade to other investments.
How Stock Profit Is Calculated
Stock profit is the difference between what you spent to buy shares and what you received when you sold them. It sounds simple, but commissions matter. Here are the formulas this calculator uses:
Total Revenue = (Sell Price × Shares) − Sell Commission
Profit / Loss = Total Revenue − Total Cost
ROI (%) = (Profit / Loss ÷ Total Cost) × 100
Per Share Profit = Profit / Loss ÷ Number of Shares
For example, if you bought 100 shares at $45.00 with a $4.99 commission, your total cost is $4,504.99. If you sold those shares at $58.00 with a $4.99 commission, your total revenue is $5,795.01. That gives you a profit of $1,290.02, an ROI of about 28.6%, and a per-share profit of $12.90.
What Is a Good ROI on a Stock Trade?
ROI (Return on Investment) tells you how much you earned compared to what you put in. There is no single “right” answer, but here is a simple way to think about it:
- 7 to 10% per year is roughly what the stock market returns on average over a long time. If your trade beats that, you did well.
- Higher is not always better. A 50% ROI sounds great, but if you only held the stock for one week, compare it to the risk you took.
- Negative ROI is a loss. That is okay. Every investor loses sometimes. What matters is your average ROI over many trades.
- Compare after commissions. This calculator already accounts for commissions, so your ROI number is your real-world return, not just a paper number.
